Religious Education

Intent

RE at Otterburn Primary provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life; beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality; issues of right and wrong; and what it means to be human. Religions and worldviews must be explored from the perspectives of those who subscribe to them as well as from those who do not. To acquire a complete picture it is not enough to merely know about different religions and worldviews; it is also important to understand what can be learned from such religions and worldviews.

RE actively promotes the values of truth, justice, respect for all and care of the environment. It places specific emphasis on:

  • pupils and students valuing themselves and others
  • the role of the family and the community in religious and non-religious belief and activity
  • the celebration of diversity in society through understanding similarities and differences  sustainable development of Planet Earth.

Implementation

RE is taught in line with Northumberland’s agreed syllabus. The aim of RE teaching is to ensure that all children know about and understand a range of world religions and worldviews, are able to express ideas and insights about the significance of these and can acquire the skills needed to engage with these world religions. This is done through sharing stories, artefacts and learning about the beliefs and customs of others.

RE lessons offer a structured and safe place for reflections, discussion, dialogue and debate. They also allow for timely and sensitive responses to unforeseen events of a religious, moral or philosophical nature whether local, global or national.

Where possible we try to ensure our children have the opportunity to meet people from other faiths and visit their places of worship to help them develop their understanding.

Impact

We want children to leave Otterburn Primary School with a good understanding of the key religious beliefs of themselves and of others.  They will be able to explain their own beliefs to others and will be able to ask questions in a sensitive and respectful manner to further their own understanding of what others believe.

These skills will enable our children to develop great friendships and relationships with the people they will meet throughout their lives, with a sense of tolerance, respect and understanding.
