Homework

Homework
At Otterburn Primary School and Nursery, homework is designed to reinforce and extend the learning that takes place in class. In line with the National Curriculum in England, it helps our children practise key skills in reading, writing and mathematics, while building independence and confidence.

Details of homework to be completed can be found on our Homework overview.

Developing Core Skills

The National Curriculum sets clear expectations for Literacy and Numeracy. At Otterburn, homework is designed to help children:

  • Practise phonics, spelling and reading comprehension through regular reading at home and use of Doodle English and Spell

  • Strengthen mathematical knowledge through weekly maths tasks, times tables, mental arithmetic and Doodle Maths/Tables practice

  • Build independent learning habits that support progress and prepare children for SATs and future learning

Supporting the Home–School Partnership

Homework at Otterburn helps to strengthen the partnership between home and school. Parents and carers can support their child by:

  • Reading together at least three times a week (daily if possible) as recommended by the National Curriculum

  • Encouraging short, regular practice on DoodleLearning to help children stay “in the green zone” on Doodle Maths, Tables, English and Spell

  • Supporting completion of activities set by the class teacher in their homework book

We operate an open-door policy and are always happy to talk. Our aim is to work in partnership with you to support your child’s learning and we warmly welcome any conversations about how homework is going.

Our Approach to Homework at Otterburn

  • Nursery & Reception: Sharing stories, rhymes and books at home. Reception children bring home reading books three times a week. Early maths is supported through fun counting games and songs.

  • Years 1–6: Daily reading logged in paper reading records, weekly maths homework in books and regular use of Doodle English, Spell, Maths and Tables.

  • Feedback: Teachers and teaching assistants check reading and maths work, celebrate effort and use information from both paper and online tasks to plan the next steps in learning.

Online Learning Sites/Apps
We encourage regular use Doodle Learning (an adaptive programme for maths and English practice). In addition to this, children also have access to Reading Eggs (an interactive platform designed to support reading and phonics through fun activities), which they may enjoy accessing at home. Further instructions and help sheets can be found at the bottom of this page.
