Phonics Screening Check
At Otterburn Primary School, we are committed to supporting every child on their journey to becoming a confident and fluent reader. As part of this, all children in Year 1 will participate in the Phonics Screening Check, which takes place each June.
The Phonics Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment that helps confirm whether children have learned to decode words using phonics to an age-appropriate standard. It consists of 40 words — a mix of real and pseudo (nonsense) words — that children read one-on-one with a teacher. Pseudo-words are included to check that children can apply their phonics skills to unfamiliar words. These are clearly marked with pictures of imaginary creatures so children know they are not real words.
Phonics is a proven method of teaching early reading by helping children match letters to sounds and blend them together to read new words. This foundational skill is vital for reading success.
How We Prepare Children
At Otterburn Primary, we ensure that every child has the best possible chance of success in the Phonics Screening Check through:
-
Daily phonics sessions tailored to pupils' current levels.
-
Small class sizes, allowing for more focused teaching and individual attention.
-
Additional interventions for children who need extra support, delivered by experienced staff.
-
Practice assessments carried out in school to build familiarity and confidence.
-
Regular discussions with parents to share progress and provide guidance for support at home.
-
A calm, supportive environment to help reduce assessment anxiety and encourage children to do their best.
Supporting Your Child
You can support your child at home by:
-
Encouraging them to sound out and blend unfamiliar words when reading.
-
Highlighting letter-sound patterns in their reading books.
-
Sharing and enjoying books together to build a love of reading.
Teachers will send home appropriately leveled ‘decodable’ books, and reading records will keep you informed about your child’s progress and interests.
After the Check
You will receive your child’s results during the second half of the summer term. If your child does not meet the expected standard, they will receive extra support and will re-take the check in Year 2. Teachers will always be available to discuss results and next steps with you.
For more information, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
